COMMUNITY AND PUBLIC POLICY LEADERS SOUND OUT

AT WESTEND “GROUNDS” COFFEEHOUSE CONCERT

FEATURING JAZZ SAXOPHONIST KEBBIE WILLIAMS

ATLANTAStanding room only, with over eighty cheering community members packed into The “Grounds” to watch Barack Obama’s speech at the National Democratic Convention, West End’s Grounds Coffeehouse(898 Oak St SW, Atlanta 30310) is becoming known as a hub for multi-cultural community engagement in grassroots public policy issues – with an artistic twist.

This Monday evening, September 8th, 2008, from 7:00 – 10:30pm, The “Grounds” will present a “Sound Out From The Soul” Jazz Concert – where metro Atlanta’s finest community leaders and public policy leaders will express their views pre-concert on defining and creating Atlanta’s culture, setting the stage for a night of jazz artistry by exciting young jazz saxophonist Kebbie Williams and group.

For the price of a cup of coffee or tea (or a smoothie drink), The Grounds will showcase Kebbie Williams, a Howard graduate in the West End, with international standing for his unique, vibrant style that captures listeners by its pulsating rhythms and lyrical turns.

“Grounds” Coffeehouse owners Percy Stith, Shannon Toney, and Maurice Sanders are just as unique as their coffee shop offerings. As renaissance “true neighborhood” advocates, with a love for music and art, their commitment to community is clear.

“We see The Grounds as our expression of what ‘true neighborhood and community’ can be – a place where neighbors get to know one another, and talk with each other, where we can meet and organize to get things done,” states co-owner Shannon Toney, pointing to recent “Save Fire Station #7” Coalition gatherings at the Grounds.

“We want to epitomize the ethic of neighborhood and community businesses,” adds partner Maurice Sanders, “that are owned, operated, and supported by neighbors living in the community.”  Sharing their active role in West End home renovation, Percy Stith summarizes:  “We want to encourage others in metro Atlanta that the West End is where sustainable rejuvenation of historic, cultural, geographic landscapes can happen – and is happening now.”

Grounds Coffee House; more than just coffee

Can a good thing get any better?  I guess we’ll find out; the owners (Carlos and Tamara) not only have expanded their menu, but also their successful business and have joined with a few creative partners!!!  I’ll have a “Meet The Partners..” blog soon.. but stop in and say “Hello”, grab one of the many smoothies (Wildberry is now my favorite, but Pina Colada is not far behind)…you can also have lunch- Tacos!  Between us- I think Percy hides the Pound Cake..lol… so be sure to ASK him for it if you dont see it.

Highlights: Extended business hours, more on the menu, new drinks, kid friendly,Wifi and it always feels as if EVERYBODY knows your name 🙂

The ties that bind us…

After a long day of homeschooling, real estate transactions, IT recruitment AND being mommy to dancing princesses -literally –Mini Me #2 Mini Me #2

it was nice to get out and take a stroll up to The Grounds Coffeehouse at the Skylofts. The atmosphere was everything you would expect and want in a growing city neighborhood.

Great music, comfortable seating, good conversation and best of all- well priced and made warm beverages! My daughters talked about the White Hot Chocolate on the walk home, and how I should have ordered another round ‘to go’ as well. I had a Mocha Latte with whipped cream and chocolate syrup… I almost ordered another when I remembered it was after 7; staying up to watch the walls at midnight was NOT an option.

The spirit of unity and ‘for the growth of OUR community’ resonated off the owners, Carlos and Tamara. You get a sense that it’s not all about the money for them.. and judging by the way my girls continued to beg me to buy cookies- for them either. (Thank you Tamara for the cookies!)

While my husband vibes with Carlos on topics ranging from Brooklyn, Redman to the changes in the West End… I was able to capture a mother son moment which made my heart proud. You can tell the two boys, (Harrison 10 and Benny 7) are proud of their parents, paving the way for these future entrepreneurs.

In all my picture taking, I neglected to capture a clear picture of Benny- who entertained my girls and has been officially deemed “the boy with the coolest cars”lol…. I’ll be sure to take another on my next visit.

I’m excited about this Coffeehouse, which caters to everyone; families, students, professionals, seniors and anyone in between. Stop in, I know you will agree it is certainly an added benefit to living in the West End.
